Accomplishments

2025

  • Hosted the annual Spring Clean-up in April.
  • Held a ceremony honoring the legacy of Gloria Wertheimer, founder of Heron Park; installed a memorial stone and enhanced the plantings around the Heron statue.
  • Concluded a successful Heron Park Brick Campaign, raising funds and installing inscribed bricks along the park pathway.
  • Coordinated with Harborfields High School to host the Senior Day of Service at the Vanderbilt Museum.
  • Continued the second year of the Student Ambassador Program with Harborfields High School.
  • Participated in the Key Communicator Forum with Rory Manning at Harborfields High School.
  • Launched the Mill Pond Walk Project, with goals to install historical and wildlife signage, improve walkability, and enhance safety along Mill Pond.
  • Submitted multiple FOIL requests and conducted ongoing monitoring for Town of Huntington plans related to the Chalet property.
  • Sent a CHCA position paper to the Town Board to formally put our stance regarding the Chalet property on record.
  • Met with Town of Huntington officials and attended Town Hall meetings to formalize CHCA opposition to proposed changes to the Steep Slope Conservation Law.
  • Advocated for landmark recognition of the Grace Log Cabin on the Grace Preserve.
  • Maintained a schedule of general meetings featuring guest speakers on community priorities.
  • Led a full review and targeted rewrite of sections of the bylaws, culminating in unanimous membership approval.
  • Advanced traffic safety initiatives for the intersections of 25A at Centerport Road and Centershore Road, including a public presentation of documented concerns at the October 28 general meeting and preparations for a Department of Transportation engagement.
  • Held multiple planning meetings with the 1653 Foundation and Cornell Cooperative Extension to advance the vision for an Oyster Reef Project in Centerport Harbor. Held an informative general meeting to instruct the public about oyster breeding in general.
  • Hosted the 2nd annual CHCA Holiday Party at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.
  • Began the overhaul of the CHCA website, including initial planning and content reorganization to improve member communication and public visibility.

Overall, 2025 strengthened CHCA’s civic leadership, expanded youth engagement, and advanced visible improvements to Heron Park while sustaining proactive advocacy on major land-use and environmental priorities.

    8. The Harborfields Central School District Budget
    9. The Second Precinct Police and their work
    10. EOSPA- Huntington’s Environmental Open Space and Park Fund
    11. Ticks and the diseases that they carry
    12. The Vanderbilt Museum- current projects and programs
    13. A program on bees
  • Participated in the annual Raptor Day
  • Hosted a “Meet the Candidates” night
  • Hosted the Deputy Town Supervisor for updates on the Town of Huntington activities
  • Revised the By-Laws
  • Addressed concerns about the cell antenna in the steeple of the Centerport United Methodist Church, spotted Lantern flies
  • Fought the development of the site of the Jellyfish restaurant by attending ZBA and Planning Board meetings to protest the plans
