Current Projects

The CHCA has undertaken an ambitious project in association with both the 1653 Foundation and Laurel Group to explore the potential of expanding the current Mill Pond Walk to eventually encircle the entire Mill Pond. The envisioned expansion would feature safe, walkable footways, the restoration of Centershore Park and signage at key points along the way, such as Heron and Gristmill Parks, to celebrate the history, culture and natural beauty of Centerport. CHCA is grateful for the participation of the Vanderbilt Museum, Hecksher Museum, Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association, Northport Arts Coalition and Opera Night Long Island in this initiative.
The Oyster Reef Initiative – This is a  CHCA initiative to start an Oyster Farm in Centerport Harbor, similar to existing projects in Northport and Huntington Harbors. Our vision is to Establish a sustainable oyster reef  in Centerport Harbor, leveraging community engagement, educational partnerships, and environmental stewardship. We have obtained advisory and technical support from the 1653 Foundation and some members of REACH.   At present, we are also looking to help expand a pilot program currently at the Montessori School.
Spring Clean-Up – This annual CHCA event is hosted every spring with the intention of maintaining the health, beauty and environmental integrity of the Centerport Mill Pond. Every year, numerous bags of trash and toxic materials  are removed from the pond.  This is a community based endeavor with numerous volunteers from Centerport and Greenlawn. There are a lot of moving parts to the effort and committee volunteers are welcome.
Annual Vanderbilt Holiday Party – 2025 was the second year of this event which has proved to be extremely popular. It has been a great way to meet and talk to other CHCA members as well as the many Town officials who attend. Last year’s party included a tour of the mansion and this year’s event included a private show in the Planetarium. It is hosted by the CHCA in conjunction with the Vanderbilt and volunteers are always welcomed to help with refreshments and decorations.
Beautification – The CHCA is looking to initiate one or more projects in 2026 to enhance the beauty and ambiance of the Mill Pond area. Our most recent effort involved the renovation of Heron Park. Volunteers will be needed for the new projects. Please stay tuned…
